The Office for Financial Success is run by our students – graduate, undergraduate, and interdisciplinary minors – who share the mission of improving the financial lives of their peers. Before serving as financial counselors, students are trained through course-work and supervised experience. Once trained, students deliver financial literacy education and peer financial advising on campus, activities that improve the financial practices of their fellow students and increase campus awareness of the department and the services that we provide.

Often students find that working with MoTax, our VITA affiliate program offered through our extension division, affirms their choice of personal financial planning as a profession. Annually, our work for low- and moderate-income households in central Missouri, through the Office for Financial Success, returns more than $2,000,000 in tax refunds, while saving those households more than $400,000 in tax preparation fees.

Featured Profile: Jim Green

University of Missouri faculty member Dr. Jim Green wants to improve students’ financial IQ.

In 2018, some 44 million Americans owed $1.5 trillion in student loan debt. As debt looms for today’s students, financial literacy is essential. Green, director of the Office of Financial Success in the Department of Personal Financial Planning, is committed to helping students learn the fundamentals of personal financial planning.

Green’s office trains student volunteers to offer peer financial counseling on student loans, budgeting and financial goal setting, investing, debt management, tax planning, insurance and retirement. All services are free. Through MU Extension’s Missouri Taxpayer Education Initiative, the office oversees tax preparation for $2 million in tax refunds for low income Missouri households saving them $400,000 in tax preparation fees. The office also offers course and curriculum support and training for high school finance teachers. And, by training student volunteers as financial planning advisors, the office trains a new generation of financial planners.

Before coming to MU, Green was a financial planning and portfolio manager in San Antonio, Texas and adjunct professor of finance at the H-E-B School of Business Administration at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Dr. Jim Green is the director of the Office for Financial Success in the personal financial planning department, part of the College of Human Environmental Sciences.
