Students in the Department of Personal Financial Planning’s Investment Management class taught by Assistant Professor Lu Fan, PhD, CFP® competed in the Edward Jones Portfolio Challenge this fall. The class formed groups of 4-5 students each and were given information about a family they used to analyze and make recommendations to accomplish the family’s goals. Dr. Fan narrowed the field to the top three teams who competed for one of three top prizes awarded by Edward Jones. The finalists presented their recommendations to a team of four judges, all Edward Jones financial advisors—Nathan Brown, Gina Mauller, Eric Willmeth, and Stephanie Goans—who scored the presentations with a focus on the portfolio objective, asset allocation and security selection, ability to answer questions from the judges and audience, and overall presentation skill. The first place team received Portfolio Challenge Champion plaques and $2,500 to split among its members: Kayla Charlton, Grant Holley, Jackson Meeker, Clayton Powell, and Conner Thompson. Second place team members sharing $1,500 included Nikki Muenz, Maya Marcum, Marco Potes, and Ryley Broadway. The third place team members sharing $1,000 included Jinglan Deng, Daniel Chen, Anqi Sun, Kai Bo, and Taohua Wen. In attendance to support the student presenters were Scott Van Genderen, principle and leader of the Edward Jones Financial Advisor Talent Acquisition Career Development University Program; Professor and Chair Fran Lawrence, PhD; Assistant Professor Abed Rabbani, PhD, CFP®; Liz Townsend Bird, Sr. Director of Advancement; Amy Sanders, Human and Environmental Sciences Director of External Relations; and other students from the Department of Personal Financial Planning. Congratulations to all teams for their excellent presentations!
