How long is the MS in PFP? How many course credits are required? Is it possible to finish the degree in one year?
We offer 3 different master’s programs. The answer depends on the program:
The resident thesis-based master’s program is a minimum of 30 hours. With a carefully planned program of study, and willingness to take summer coursework a student could finish in 1 ½ years. A student might be able to finish in one year if willing and able to take an overload on classes in each semester. This program requires an acceptable grade on the GRE or GMAT.
The Applied master’s program is a non-thesis 36 hour program. This program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. and is designed to prepare students to sit for the CFP® exam.
An online master’s program. This program is 42 hours. It is offered in co operation with the Great Plains Distance Education Alliance. More information is available on that program at http://www.gpidea.org/prospective/financial/fpProgram.html
What are the requirements for your graduate program as a international candidate?
International students need to have a score at or above 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
If a candidate wants to pursue a joint program with an MBA & MS in PFP ,would it be possible to pursue a dual degree? Is it possible to complete a dual degree within 2 years?
Yes, it is possible to pursue a degree in both programs. A 2 ½ to 3 year time span would probably be more realistic for meeting requirements in both programs.
What sort of background is recommended to enter the PhD program?
It is helpful to have a background in economics and statistics. But students can catch up if they do not have these when admitted.
How many PHD students are admitted per year?
We admit about 2 to 4 Phd students a year.
How long does it typically take to finish the PhD program?
Length of time to finish varies but typically is 3 to 4 years.
Are you accepting the application?
Yes, we are accepting applications. Applications for fall semester should be made by the end of April.
Do you have a study plan for your graduate program? I cannot find it on website.
Each student’s plan of study will vary to some degree, depending on the specific program and the student’s background, needs, and career plans.
Can I tranfer similar classes from previous degree (studies) such as economics, statistics if they are similar.
Yes, coursework can be transferred. The amount of courses that can be transferred depends on where the courses were taken (off campus or on campus) and the student’s program of study.
Do you actually receive a Masters at the end of this program or if it only entitles you to sit for the CFP exam?
We offer two on-line programs – an 18 hour Certificate in Personal Financial Planning and a 42 hour Master’s program in Personal Financial Planning. The Certificate focuses just on the education needed to sit for the CFP® exam. The 42 hour MS degree includes those 18 hours plus additional coursework in such things as case analysis, client/planner relationships, and professional practice. The MS degree is a Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning.
